Summary
A focus of semiotics research in contemporary art is to use Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics to redefine the concept, function, and nature of art, or to use his trichotomies to specifically analyze works of art. In order to promote the further integration of semiotic theory and artistic research, this lecture is based on Peirce's manuscript and specifically explains the following three aspects:
1. Redefine symbols and symbolic activities from the trichotomies of symbols, and explain how they can be used in contemporary art analysis;
2. Trichotomies of symbols and universal iconicity;
3. Peirce's general views on art and symbolic aesthetics.
